School Music - Jocelyn Memorial Trophy

Arthur Jocelyn competed in the very first Festival in 1927, playing a saxophone solo. In 1928, he competed in the vocal solo (bass) class. Mr. and Mrs. Jocelyn had three very musically talented children - Irene, Gordon and Mary. They all competed in the Festival for many years.
Irene competed in both Piano and vocal classes until 1938. Her brother, Gordon, completed from 1928 until 1939 in piano solo and duet classes. In addition to his piano solo classes, he also conducted Miss Ahren's Studio Rhythm Band in 1936. Mary competed briefly in piano duet classes in 1929 and 1930.
Irene Jocelyn, A.T.C.M., went on to become a teacher of piano, voice and theory. . She was a member of the Perth County Music Teachers' Federation and served, between 1936 and 1939, on various committees to prepare the Stratford Music Festival, including Finance, Reception and Programs. She also conducted choruses for young women who competed in the Festival, the Shakespearean Girls' Choir (1935) and later the Orpheus Girls' Choir and the Elizabethan Girls' Choir (1940 - 1946).
This trophy was originally presented to a grade 7 or 8 Classroom Choir but has most recently been given to Grade 1 - 6 Mixed Choir.
